Wash and drain pumps, spray arm blockages, door seals, and the difference between a machine that has failed and one that is being asked to do the impossible.

Most dishwasher complaints are one of two things: the machine is not getting water where it needs to go, or it never had a mechanical fault in the first place. Both are fixable. They need very different work.

Poor wash results, before anyone replaces a part

Wash-quality complaints are worth working through in order, because most of them are not a failed component and all four checks below are free.

Start with the filter stack. The fine filter and the coarse strainer around the sump lift out by hand, and in a kitchen where they have never been removed they are frequently found blocked solid. A blocked filter recirculates dirty water through the arms and puts a film on the whole load, which reads as a pump problem and is not one.

Then the arms themselves. Spin each one by hand: it should turn freely, and no jet should be blocked by a seed, a chip of glass or debris pressed into the hub. A single blocked jet leaves a shadow across one part of the rack.

Then the incoming water temperature. Run the nearest tap until it is hot before starting a cycle, particularly where the water heater is a long way from the kitchen. A machine that starts with a fill of cold water extends its own cycle heating it, and on shorter programmes it may never reach the temperature the detergent needs.

Then the load. A tall pan laid across the middle of the lower rack blocks the feed to the upper arm as effectively as any fault inside the machine, and a plastic item that has moved during the cycle can stop an arm dead.

If all four are right and the results are still poor, the fault is mechanical and worth a visit.

Water not going where it should

If the lower rack washes and the upper does not, suspect the feed to the upper arm rather than the pump. Viking dishwashers route water up a rear tube or through the rack coupling; a coupling that is out of position, or a tube seal that has hardened, drops upper-rack pressure while the lower arm carries on looking healthy.

If neither arm is turning well, we check for the ordinary blockers first: a stray seed or a chip of glass under the arm hub, a filter that has never been removed, and the coarse strainer around the sump. Then the circulation pump itself, then the diverter that alternates flow between the arms.

Standing water and drain faults

Water in the sump at the end of a cycle is a drain problem, and the order of likelihood is boring but reliable: blocked filter, blocked drain hose, a drain pump impeller wrapped in something fibrous, a failed drain pump, then the control. We also check the air gap or the high loop at the sink, because a drain hose that has slumped below the pump outlet siphons dirty water back into the machine every time, and no part inside the dishwasher will fix that.

Leaks

A dishwasher leak is worth taking seriously in a house with wood floors, and most of the coast has them. Two sources dominate. The door seal takes a set and stops touching in the lower corners, which produces a slow drip you notice as a warped floorboard rather than as water. The other is the pump seal, which leaks into the base rather than out the front, so the first symptom is often the machine cutting out mid-cycle when the base pan float rises.

If your machine has stopped mid-cycle and there is water underneath it, turn the supply off at the stop valve under the sink before you call. That protects the floor while you wait.

Installation details that cause faults

A dishwasher panelled to match cabinetry is heavier at the door than a standard unit, and the hinge springs are set for that weight. If a heavy custom panel was added later without adjusting the springs, the door drops, the seal loads unevenly and the latch stops aligning. We check panel weight and spring tension on any integrated machine.
